ou ever get the feeling a guy you’re dating is from another planet?

It’s the literal truth in my case.
Volkor’s tall, handsome, great with my kid…
Oh, and an alien warrior bent on stopping the apocalypse.

Only he gets my heart racing like no one else.
When he caresses my cheek, smooths my hair, and kisses my lips

I don’t see an alien warrior. I see the man who loves me.

But the path to true love never runs smooth.
And I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard the line “our love is going to save humanity” when a guy is rounding third base.
Not sure I believe him.

What I do know is that Volkor is the deadliest man in the galaxy.
And once he’s done saving humanity…

I’ll remind him (again) to lower the toilet seat.

Author's Note: This full length science fiction romance is a standalone. HEA guaranteed!

Chapter 1

Volkor

My heavily armed Vakutan Deathwing cuts through the cloud cover. The cockpit glass grows misty for a moment as I pass through the clouds. Then it fades and the lights of a city appear beneath me.

I tap the communicator on my console to report in.

“This is Commander Volkor. I have arrived at the coordinates designated Stone Ridge. I will now integrate myself seamlessly with the community.”

I tap the keys on the control console and push forward on the stick. The Deathwing heads toward the ground, inertial dampening meaning I feel little change in the cockpit. Thanks to light-bending stealth technology, any human who looks up is unlikely to see anything at all. The most they will make out is a slight distortion in the air, easily explained by eyestrain or imagination.

The Deathwing nears the ground and I kill the thrusters, going to pure antigrav. Silently, I hover toward the ground. I deploy the rubber coated wheels at the last moment, and hit the converter switch. The wings fold in, and the ship assumes a more cylindrical appearance.

I hit the holographic image inducer switch, and my ship becomes shrouded in an illusory field of manipulated light. Now it will look like a Recreational Vehicle—RV for short—of the Winnebago brand.

I drive to an RV park on the edge of the modest human settlement known as Stone Ridge. It’s just large enough to be classified as a city, though unlike other human cities of this era I’ve never heard of it. It’s certainly no New York, Chicago, Paris, or Tokyo.

A few taps on my compad, and I use funds from the Veritas accounts to pay for my lot for the next several months. I then fix it so that all of my paperwork is on file, even though I never filled any of it out.

As long as I keep my head down, and always wear my holographic disguise, I should draw no attention to myself while I carry out my mission. I doubt the humans of this fair settlement would be keen on a seven foot tall, blue scaled Vakutan warrior walking among them.

Even if I am here to save them.

I park the RV in my freshly rented lot and step out of the cockpit. I get all of a step when I hear an alert. Turning around, I find that there’s an incoming aircraft. At first, I think maybe the hologram malfunctioned and it’s the human authorities.

A quick scan reveals a ship not of Earth origin. I recognize the flying saucer with a globe in the middle design.

The Baragon. Whatever aspect of the past I’m here to protect, it must be vitally important for the Baragon to be active in the area. They may have seen through my cloak.

I have to accept the possibility. I head through the cabin, past the small living quarters to the arsenal in the back.

I push a button and the wall opens up, revealing all manner of handheld weaponry. Slug throwing rifles, pulse blasters, plasma cannon, grenade launchers, blades, clubs, staves, and even an Odex Power blade all lay out before me.

I select the Plutonium Pulverizer, technical name the X418 Anti-Aircraft cannon. The gun is nearly as long as I am tall, the barrel big enough to fire a round the size of a human basketball.

Stepping out into the darkened RV park, I search the night skies for my quarry. I see it, then, a distortion in the air that can be nothing other than a cloaked ship.

I use my compad to confirm it’s a Baragon ship, just in case, and then sight it up. I flip on the switch to power the Pulverizer. The first of a series of rectangular lights illuminates along the side of it.

The ship overhead comes out of cloak, an ion cannon array glowing with eerie red light. They must have detected the Pulverizer coming on line. It does have a nuclear power source.

I check the lights. About halfway up the length of the barrel. Another one winks into existence. It’s going to be close.

If I were a lesser warrior, I would perhaps consider fleeing, or taking cover. But I am Volkor. My name is synonymous with fear. I feast on fear, and dine on devastation!

The enemy ship comes in on a strafing run. I check the progress. One bar to go. When they are almost on top of me the last light turns on, and the whole affair goes green.

“Die, Baragon scum!”

I pull the trigger. The blowback from the weapon is such that it tips over a nearby car onto its side, triggering the alarm. A streak of white, crackling light shoots out of the barrel and slams into the enemy ship.

A heavy thump proceeds a shockwave that washes over the RV park and sets the surrounding trees to dancing as if in a heavy storm. I brush some dust off my shoulder as the baragon craft goes down past the tree line and out of sight. A distant crackle, and then the glow of fire in the night.

I lower the gun, and realize that I’m no longer the only one in the park still awake. Dozens of park denizens are staring at me, some of them outside their dwellings, others staring through windows.

“Fuck me.” I can’t have all of these witnesses knowing I’m an alien. I drop the Pulverizer to the ground and extract a device from my belt.

I push a button, and a holographic green globe appears in the air over my head. I activate the globe, and it bursts into a flash of brilliant white light.

The Vakutan Memory Adjustment Console has a number of nice features. The nicest of them is that it puts out an electromagnetic wave, so that even those humans who didn't witness the burst are still affected by it.

I speak into the VMAC, instructing the subconscious minds of those humans affected to remember what I tell them to.

“You did not see an alien shoot down a UFO. There was a crop-duster plane that crashed. You will all go back to sleep now.”

I tuck the device away, recover my weapon, and head back to my disguised ship. The humans stand around staring blankly. It takes about a minute for the VMAC’s effects to fully take hold. Then they will be back to normal—except for their altered memories, of course.

Inside the RV, I put my weapon away and concentrate on myself. I strip out of my flight suit, and stuff my blue scales into a human styled professional garment called a ‘suit.’ As if it is the only type in the galaxy, such hubris.

I adjust my tie and make sure the fit of the suit is impeccable. Then I utilize a smaller version of the holographic image inducer, one disguised as an Earth fountain pen.

It changes my blue scales to appear as human skin, as well as softening some of my more alien features, like the ridges of bone on my skull. I now look like a perfectly normal human being.

I smile, and my teeth are still numerous and sharp. A few taps of the button, and I adjust the image inducer until I have the human's omnivorous dental arrangement instead of my own.

I smile again, and this time the disguise is perfect.

“Hello,” I say. “I am Joe Johnson, a human being from Earth. I like football and Rock music and eating apple pie.”

I snap my fingers.

“Got it! My disguise is perfect. I sound like an authentic human. Now, it’s time to begin my mission…saving the Earth.”
